Whether embellished with studs, shearling, fringe’s or simply plain, leather has been a statement fabric for many years. Back in 2006 leather jackets were scattered throughout the country on celebrities and fashion idols alike. High-street copies were soon duplicated and leather became a staple item for every wardrobe. Whether adding to the punkish style that was making a comeback from the 80’s, or updating the floaty feminine bo-ho look that we see each summer, leather was back and it still hasn’t left.
The A/W 2010 collections saw this fabric on every item of clothing possible. Yves St Laurent created leather corsetry, adding a little bondage and kink to the fashion. A few years back we would have scoffed at the idea of leather trousers as an alternative to jeans. But this season, leather trousers are seen everywhere.
Celebrities such as Halle Berry and Elle Macpherson have been seen in cropped versions. One particular lusted after item is the red/black cropped pair, designed by Isabel Marant and worn by high profile figures like Victoria Beckham and Kate Bosworth. Leather has replaced jeans for many women. Polly Vernon, deputy editor of the Observer Magazine, said ‘I wear leather trousers more than jeans these days.’ But this isn’t a look everyone can wear as this fabric tends to highlight flaws rather than compliment figures.
Not only is it the full length form that has taken the catwalk by storm, but leather shorts have made a comeback from the hooker-esque association they had before. Black studded, high-waisted or camel coloured shorts are now filling high-street stores everywhere.
Is this a trend that will stay on for much longer? The leather jacket, if worn well can be timeless. Whilst there will always be times when it is overused and times when it is adored, the simple addition of a leather jacket to any outfit adds and edge and a little inspiration to the look. Leather shorts and trousers however, could easily be forgotten in a few seasons time. It is the difficulty and risky nature of this item that means it will probably be abandoned within a few seasons.
